General information

A holder of a personal use permit does not have to renew their permit every year. The information session is therefore valid until the next major amendment to the Marine Mammal Regulations.

An assistant hunter also does not have to renew their permit every year, but to become a professional hunter, an assistant hunter, from the age of 18, will automatically become a professional after having officially recorded hunting activities supervised by a professional/commercial for two consecutive years.

If he skips a year, he starts again at year 1.

Once professional, the seal hunter MUST renew his permit annually, otherwise he will lose it and will have to start the departure process again. Generally, DFO sends renewal messages to commercial (professional) permit holders at the beginning of each year.

**N.B.: Remember to activate your profile at least once a year, since failing to do so will result in your profile being deactivated and you will need to contact the DFO to regain access.

COMPLETE YOUR LICENSE:

Once your information session is complete, the Association des chasseurs de phoques Intra-Québec (ACPIQ) will provide your certificate and contact information to DFO. You must then:

  • Register for the National Online Licensing System (NOLS) at https://fishing-peche.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/. For assistance, you can contact customer service at the toll-free number 1-877-535-7307.
  • Once the secure login is complete, you must apply for a licence online.
  • In Application Type, select New Licence Application.
  • In the Application Subtype tab, select either Seal-Hunter’s Assistant Permit (allowing you to accompany a professional) or Seal-Personal Use Permit, giving you access to a maximum of six (6) seals per year (either gray seal or harp seal).

N.B.: The personal use permit is only available to those who have a permanent address in one of the coastal regions designated by the DFO (Magdalen Islands, North Shore, Gaspésie, Lower St. Lawrence). As there is no precise map that determines these areas, those who are uncertain about their status should contact their local DFO office directly.
